Gaming Consoles- Nintendo Entertainment System: (1983)

When you think about video game consoles one of the very first ones that comes to mind includes the Nintendo Entertainment System.  When this the Nintendo Entertainment System was released in the early 80’s many people were thrilled by the 8 bit gameplay this console had produced along with the memorable titles for this system.  The Nintendo Entertainment System was the console where many legendary games such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania became big names in the gaming world.  The Nintendo Entertainment System was also the console where both RPG & Platform gaming became very popular since these type of games were never really featured in arcade games.  The Nintendo Entertainment System was considered to be the successor to the Color TV game console released exclusively in Japan in 1977.  Usually, when most people think about gaming in regards to the 70’s the Atari 2600 is the first console that instantly comes to mind.

Prior to the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System people around the world had also utilized various computer systems such as the Commodore VIC-20 and the Commodore 64 during the early 80’s for 8-bit gaming.  The release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in the 1980’s was not only revolutionary to the gaming industry but it also saved it during its recession period known as the “Video Game Crash of 1983”. Shortly, after the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System the console began to receive competition from rival companies such as the Sega & SNK corporation along with NEC Home Electronics.  One of the interesting features about the Nintendo Entertainment System was the mechanical components of this console such as the 8-bit microprocessor known as MOS Technology 6502 which also featured in other CPU hardware systems such Atari & Apple II which was produced in the late 70’s.

Since its release the Nintendo Entertainment System has sold at least 60 million units worldwide with the most sales in America being up to 3o million.  The best selling games for this console included the original Super Mario Bros game which is a classic game which paved the way for many other 2D platform games in the 90’s.  Sometimes its hard to believe that the Nintendo Entertainment System was released over 30 years ago considering how far gaming as come since the 1980’s.  One thing for sure is that the Nintendo Entertainment System is considered to be legendary for a variety of reasons including its impact on the video game industry as a whole.
