Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is one of the many games in the Mario series that does not get mentioned as much. When this title was first released for Game Boy in the early 90’s it was something that was unique because it greatly differed from most of the other games in the Mario series at the time. Generally, most Super Mario games at the time had included the ongoing saga of dealing with the most well known antagonist of the series Bowser. The plot for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was interesting because not only did it a new villain but also something that was unexpected in a Mario game at the. Not having Bowser as the main villain of a Mario game felt different and was one of the many elements of the title that would draw people into this game. In this game Mario has to collect 6 coins throughout the game in order to gain access to his palace along with defeating Wario who took it over.
This game not only features 30 plus levels but it also includes some interesting boss battles that were seemed unusual for a Mario game. In this game you battled bosses in the most unlikely settings such as space and underwater and fought creatures such as witches and pigs. The boss battle with the Three Little Pig Heads was probably one of the toughest fights along with the underwater encounter with Pako which probably just as annoying as the Three Little Pig Heads. By the the time you collect the six coins to confront Wario in the palace you must battle him while he has the ability to utilize the same type of offense Mario has whenever he collects a special item. Wario having the ability to utilize fireball attacks along with flying him makes him more difficult than most of the bosses in the game.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins might not been ranked as one of the best titles in the Mario series but the game itself is special for a few reasons. The first reason deals with the debut of Wario as a new character to the Mario series. The introduction of Wario made the game a memorable title because it was one of the few Mario games in the 90’s were Bowser was not the main villain. Second, the story for this game was very different because instead of rescuing the Princess he had to regain control of his castle. It was pretty cool to see Nintendo to try something new while diverting from the traditional story feature Mario, Bowser and Princess Peach. Since its release in the early 90’s Nintendo was kind enough to re-release this game for the 3DS a few years ago. Since its release Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins has been viewed as somewhat of an underrated classic in the Mario series. While this game might not be considered the best in the Mario series it will probably be among most exciting and yet bizarre titles you will play for Game Boy.
